The Yoshino Cherry Tree

Yoshino Cherry Tree BloomThe Yoshino Cherry Tree aka Prunus x yedoensis

This Yoshino Cherry tree is truly a lovely flowering tree. It is the baby of our garden!  When our son selected a Yoshino Cherry tree as the next addition to our garden, we were all thrilled with that choice.

One of our neighbors has an adult Yoshino Cherry tree in their yard and we have spent the last 15 years enjoying it’s blooms, but this year we had our own.

We planted it right outside our den window so that we would be able to enjoy it all day long.  It has exceeded our expectations.  Not only is it a real beauty, but I now have a little story to tell about the first year it bloomed for us.

An Easter Story

Yoshino Cherry Tree BloomsIn our area, the Yoshino Cherry tree blooms somewhere around the beginning of April.  That is a few weeks later than our ornamental magnolias and our flowering Pear trees.  This is, of course, an ideal situation.  We are able to enjoy new blossoms in our yard all Spring.

The year I took the photo below was the first year our little tree has bloomed in our yard and our son was  residing in his college dorm.  I wanted to take a lot of pictures to send to him of his baby.  The first pictures show the tree budding and they progress each day until the tree is covered with beautiful white blooms.

It was early morning on Good Friday when I made my way out back to take the pictures for that day.  I was absolutely stunned at the glorious sight before me.  Those beautiful white blossoms had turned pink with a red center.  The message, “see what I have done for you,” was as loud and clear to me as if He stood before me in all of His splendor and glory delivering the real Easter message.

What a beautiful reminder of the significance of that day.

Watching and Waiting

Right now, it is still a small tree.  I will enjoy watching our Yoshino Cherry Tree grow to the maturity of a large shade tree.  It will be interesting to see what other miracles it will display.
You may rest assured, I will be waiting!

Buying and Planting a Yoshino Cherry Tree

Purchasing a Yoshino Cherry Tree

I don’t recommend purchasing a Yoshino Cherry tree online.  I prefer seeing the tree, the shape of the tree, the height of the tree, and the condition of a tree before I purchase it.  However, if you do not have a local nursery with a Yoshino Cherry tree available, this would be the nursery and tree I would select.

Planting Your Tree

Since areas vary, I would always defer to the recommendations of a local nursery since they are most familiar with your soil.  However, here is a basic guide for planting your Yoshino Cherry tree.

  • Select a Well Drained Area for Your Yoshino Cherry tree
  • Dig a hole the depth of the root area of the tree and approximately twice the width of the root base of the tree.
  • Soak the roots in water
  • Place the tree in the hole and gently spread the roots when possible.
  • Note: Do Not Plant the tree too deep.  Only enough to completely cover the root area.  You may be able to see the ring right above the roots that will show the original depth it was planted in the nursery.  That is the ideal depth.
  • Firmly cover the roots with the existing soil.  Clay ground will require you to mix in store bought soil, but the existing area soil is actually preferred.
  • Water the tree thoroughly to remove air pockets and to compact the soil.

All of the photos in this article are pictures of my very own Yoshino Cherry tree. Several of Yoshino Cherry Tree photos, including the pink blossom in this articles, are available on Zazzle. I do request that you not copy, download or use these photos without prior written permission from me.
