How to Weed-Proof and Grass-Proof Your Flower Beds & Gardens

Weed-proof flower beds & gardensI love gardening, but I absolutely hate pulling weeds!  I have tried several different methods of killing the weeds and grass that are always determined to take over my flower beds.  Nothing has really worked well for me until I discovered the Perm-A-Mulch Pathway.

There are a dozen things to love about this product, but mostly, it really does work!

Last spring, I covered my small flower bed on the side of my house with the Perm-A-Mulch Pathway.  I started with this small area as a test area because I knew if it worked there, I could use it in all of my beds.  But if it did not work as advertised, only a few hours and a limited investment would be wasted.

I am thrilled to say, here we are a full year later and I could not be happier with the results!

How to Install and Use Perm-A-Mulch Pathway

  1. Start by Cleaning and Clearing Out the Flower Beds.  (Do not remove plants or trees, only weeds, leaves & debris)
  2. Cut Strips of the Perm-A-Mulch Pathway and Lay Them Slightly Overlapping
  3. Cut Circles Out at the Base of Each Plant or Tree
  4. Cover with Gardening Rocks to Hold the Perm-A-Mulch in Place

Benefits & Highlights of the Perm-A-Mulch Pathway

  1. No More Weeds
  2. No More Grass Taking Over My Flower Beds
  3. Easy to Lay
  4. Easy to Cut
  5. Water Can Permeate it to Water the Plants
  6. Made of Recycled Tires

You will want to take a moment to look at the photos below.

Gardening Lava Rocks to Hold Perma Mulch in Place

We have used the Red Lava Rock in our Flower Beds for nearly 20 years.  It is my personal favorite rock to use in my flower beds.  It is fairly lightweight to work around, yet heavy enough to hold bedding fabric in place.

Protect Your Trees with Perma Mulch Rings!

I have also added these tree rings at the base of each of my decorative trees.  The tender bark on my magnolia trees, my Yoshina Cherry tree and all of our baby trees are entirely too susceptible to disease if the bark is broken or cut by a weed-eater.

Nothing grows through this awesome product, and yet, water is able to penetrate it in order to water the trees.  The rings are also rather attractive.  Not the least bit distracting from the aesthetics of the yard.

Another big plus, it makes cutting the grass a lot easier simply because you don’t have to duck under the lower tree limbs to cut the grass underneath.

I actually like the Perma Mulch Tree Rings so much that I included them with the Rose of Sharon Bushes that I gave my mom for Mother’s Day last year.

  1. I love gardening too and this sounds really useful! I also do like that water can permeate through. I can see this would save hours of weeding 🙂

  2. You had me at weed proof! This sounds like what I need. Thanks for the recommendation.

  3. Oh wow, I wonder if we can get that here…..sounds like an answer to a prayer or two for me…..thanks Miss Cynthia for this product review.

This is brilliant. I need to get this for my front pathway and the shrub area in front of my house. I love having the plants there, but getting in there under our big Burning Bush to pull weeds is really difficult now that it’s gotten larger. Thanks for the recommendation 😉

Thank you so much for this review. This is exactly what I need right now. I have just spent most of the afternoon weeding my front garden. I seem to be able to grow weeds and rocks mainly.

I checked on Amazon UK and they have it but it’s out of stock. I’ll be checking back again very soon – I really hope it comes back!

    Thanks again for the tip!

Stephanie, thank you so much for asking this question! I had not realized that the link was not longer valid. I have now replaced the link to the Plow & Hearth Pathway in the article. You can find the product here: https://amzn.to/3aQHMzl

Can I put this over existing mulch? …then add whatever topper (mulch, rock, etc)
